As the heat comes to Empordà, our next exhibition captures the natural world rough and messy, beautifully chaotic, overgrown, bright with life.
Xavier González Arnau, a self-taught and itinerant painter, has let himself be carried by the winds of life in Barcelona, Berlin, Italy or New York, leaving works of art in his wake. He has come to rest in the Baix Empordà, where he lives in a barn surrounded by nature, and where he creates his immense, visceral and vivid paintings among flora and fauna; amongst animals including his own horses.
González Arnau is a painter’s painter, in a way he revisits the Catalan classics of the 19th century such as Modest Urgell, whom he venerates, Joaquim Vayreda or Francesc Gimeno and at the same time has the strength of Anselm Kiefer and the 20th century painters. This mix makes him extremely unique right now on the national art scene.
Xavier is as far from the digital world as possible. He departs from the civilized world and captures pure nature; or perhaps it is better to say that he lets it flow through him. The viewer can sink into his paintings through contemplation, direct connection, the discovery of growing details up close, and drink in the whole when exhibited in a space that allows for sufficient distance from the works. ; a space like Secret Mill.
