Exhibition

For our opening exhibition, we reach back through time to some of the earliest human creative acts: gesture and form.

José María de Aurora offers us etheric work that lifts itself from the canvas, each a miniature Zen garden turned on its side, a small universe of tranquility resulting from a meditative application of paint through gesture. Just as the movement of the wind leaves its trace on the dunes of the wilder beaches of Alt Empordá, Jose leaves a record of his spirit upon the work itself. Each is a sculpture of human movement, recorded in three dimensions: unique, irreducible, irreproducible.

Yoyo Balagué brings form to the earth, through ceramic art, one of the oldest disciplines, incorporating the natural materials of clay; earth and water. She meets her materials with ritualistic intent, collaborating with matter to shape imperfectly perfect forms that evoke inverted mountains, miniature planets, incipient universes. Each object, simple and unpretentious, calls for increasingly closer and longer inspection as, like with all forms in nature, the deeper one looks, the more there is to see.

Both José Maria and Yoyo share a deeply held reverence for the sacred nature of the creative act: the ritualistic and meditative approach to make and hold space, the essential collaboration between the creator and the medium, and the opportunity their works provide others: contemplation and the space for it.

Between the earth and the aether, they invite us to wander; and contemplate our place in this world, a world shaping and shaped by our human interactions.
